10 BRAND NEW Core Modules…

The OHC Model of ME, CFS and Fibromyalgia

Alex offers a general definition and explains why lack of clarity in diagnosis is a key aspect of this group of illnesses and goes onto outline the process and cycle of how someone becomes ill. Alex also introduces the OHC model of subtypes, and the importance of being in a healing state.

Coaching yourself for recovery

Learning to be our own best coach and navigate the twists and turns of recovery is critically important. In this module Alex talks about learning to be proactive and get yourself inspired, the importance of solving the puzzle of your own recovery, and the power of positive action.

Introduction to functional medicine

Helen Lynam, Director of Nutrition at OHC, explains why digestion and absorption are so critical and some key principles that can impact. She goes on to explore the importance of cellular energy production and mitochondrial function, and outlines the role supplements can play in supporting healing.

Pacing and preventing relapse

Alex explores key elements of the OHC approach around stages of recovery and types of tiredness. Stages of recovery help us understand why treatments that are helpful at one stage can be harmful at another. Types of tiredness help us balance our activity based on the kind of tiredness we are experiencing. Alex also explains how to increase activity using the concept of bouncing the boundaries.

Working with emotions

Unprocessed emotions can play a critical role in both causing and impacting recovery.
Furthermore, learning to listen to and work in harmony with the body is a key part of the healing journey. In this series Alex explores how to work with your emotions in a way which supports healing.

Introduction to meditation

Meditation teacher Linda Hall shares the story of her own recovery ME/CFS and the powerful role that meditation played in supporting it. She goes onto explain what meditation is and what it isn’t, share some of the benefits and then lead a simple guided meditation.

Meditation applications

Linda Hall builds on the introductory course and teaches specific practices to support recovery. Applications include how to cultivate awareness, be more grounded, and develop self-compassion.

Introduction to EFT

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is at the forefront of the new field broadly defined as Energy Psychology. By tapping on certain acupuncture points whilst being tuned into emotions, research has found that powerful releases and healing can happen. In this introductory series Emma Johnson, EFT trainer and OHC psychology practitioner, teaches the fundamentals of EFT as used by the OHC team.

EFT applications

Emma Johnson builds on the introduction series to introduce specific application of EFT. Sessions include the full EFT recipe, emergency short cuts, the personal peace procedure, constricted breathing technique, EFT choices protocol and how to work with beliefs.

Recovery stories

Alex Howard interviews a range of former OHC patients about their journey of recovery from CFS, ME and Fibromyalgia. Guests talk candidly about what has helped them, what hasn’t and their core lessons from being ill. Whilst each path to recovery is unique, there are also central themes that join them, and Alex helps the viewer identify what these might be using the map of The Optimum Health Clinic.

“After 10 years as a trustee of Action for ME, and after struggling to get clarity when I wrote a book on ME in the late nineties, I just wish that the thorough and integrated approach at The Optimum Health Clinic had been available then.”

What evidence is there for Secrets to Recovery?

In 2014 a peer reviewed research study was published on Secrets to Recovery in Psychology Research and Behavior Management, independently conducted by the Chronic Illness Research Team at University of East London.

Despite only having an eight-week follow up due to time constraints, the study found improvements in sleeping difficulties and perceived control. It has been found in previous research that perceived control impacts functional ability and psychological adjustment in those with ME/CFS over time.

A landmark study on the OHC’s approach ME/CFS was also published in the British Medical Journal Open in 2012 and found statistically significant improvement in all treatment groups at three months. The OHC is currently conducting a randomised controlled trial on its approach in the UK with University of Surrey.
